By Anna Hall, Hickory, NC Publisher Mom December 18, 2014

Kids of all ages love Cheerios.  Here's a festive spin on a classic marshmallow treat which uses Cheerios to create a Christmas tree snack which kids can help decorate.  You can also choose to make Christmas wreath shapes using the same recipe.  Experiment with and have fun using different candies for decoration.  Substitute Rice Krispies for the Cheerios if you prefer the classic recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups marshmallows
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • green food coloring
  • 3 cups Cheerios
  • cooking spray
  • M&Ms, sprinkles, colored icing tube, etc
  • powdered sugar, optional
Directions:

- Melt butter in medium sauce pan. Add marshmallows and heat over low heat, stirring constantly.

- When mixture is smooth, add a few drops of green food coloring and stir until evenly colored to desired shade.

- Pour the marshmallow mixture over the Cheerios in a bowl. Mix until evenly coated.

- Coat your hands with cooking spray. Shape the Cheerios mixture into Christmas tree shapes of desired sizes.

- Press the candies and/or sprinkles into the trees and use colored icing to draw on additional decorations.

- For our tree topper, we shaped a marshmallow into a star shape and coated in powdered sugar. Sprinkling powdered sugar gives the look of freshly fallen snow.

-Refrigerate about an hour until firm. Serve and enjoy!
