Massachusetts Tax-Free Weekend is August 29-30, 2020

August 20, 2020

Squeeee!  The Massachusetts Department of Revenue has set August 29-30, 2020, as a Tax-Free Weekend.  Retail purchases made in Massachusetts for items up to $2,500 total, if intended for personal use, will be exempt from the 6.25% MA sales tax.  Online and in-person purchases qualify.   Remember, food and most clothing are not taxed in Massachusetts. (Clothing items over $175 are subject to sales tax; in this case, the amount exceeding $175, up to $2500, would be exempt from the normal sales tax.)

Items to consider purchasing to take advantage of the tax savings:

  • Laptops, computers, and printers
  • School supplies
  • Tires
  • Cameras
  • Yard Equipment
  • Cosmetics
  • Books
  • Mattresses
  • Furniture

Note that some items don't qualify for the sales tax holiday exemption:

  • Meals
  • Motor vehicles
  • Motorboats
  • Telecommunications services
  • Gas/steam/electricity utilities
  • Tobacco products
  • Marijuana or marijuana products
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Layaway sales
  • Any single item whose price is more than $2,500
