Acton Tree Scavenger Hunt

Learn about Canary Trees and hunt for 10 trees throughout Acton

By Karen Watkins September 10, 2020

A tree scavenger hunt sounds like a fun activity, doesn’t it?  And this scavenger hunt really is delightful!  But how did Mothers Out Front Acton—a group dedicated to addressing climate change—end up creating a tree scavenger hunt? Recently we launched a campaign in Acton called “Canary Trees,” highlighting the Acton street trees being damaged by methane leaks from the aging natural gas lines in our town.  The idea is that the trees are like canaries in a coal mine, warning us of danger.  But we also wanted to highlight the great contribution healthy trees make to a community. So we set out to find ten trees across our town, utilizing the wonderful conservation areas, the parks, the natural and cultural history of Acton, and some just plain fun neighborhood trees.  This slideshow is the result.  We had a blast making it, discovering really special places around town and learning a lot.  We hope that you and your families will enjoy it, too!
