It’s always fun when children walk into our studios looking to see what our weekly drawing project will be. We hear about “guessing games” they play with their parents or siblings over what it might be. Every once in a while they guess right! Unless we’re drawing an Axolotl (an exotic salamander) or a Pangolin (scaly ant eater) because no one ever guesses that!
Drawing is a visual communication life skill that anyone can learn. While some people do have a natural ability to visualize and organize the world around them into drawings, paintings and sculptures, most need training to develop the “process” thinking that leads to skill. Leonardo DaVinci was trained as an apprentice along with Michelangelo, Caravaggio, and dozens of other artists who left their marks on the world. Even the masters benefited from the knowledge and guidance of the teachers who they eventually surpassed. When children learn to draw and paint, their creative impulses are set free and their lives and careers are enriched.
