Hop into Spring With These DIY Salt Dough Easter Eggs

Salt dough takes just 2 ingredients, plus water!

Are you on the hunt for an egg-citing Easter craft? Look no further than salt dough Easter eggs! Not only is it a great project for kids, but the eggs will also last forever, making them the perfect gift or annual springtime decoration.

We recently gave this classic craft a fresh twist and had an egg-cellent time painting and creating our own eggs. Trust us, this simple yet entertaining activity will have you and your little ones cracking up for hours, and the end result will be egg-straordinary!

Salt dough Easter eggs

First,  you'll need to make salt dough. This is super simple and takes just two ingredients, plus water!

Salt Dough:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1/2 cup water

Directions: 

Stir together all of the ingredients until a dough forms. Knead the dough until smooth.

Now you're ready to make your salt dough Easter eggs.

What you need:

  • Salt dough
  • Rolling pin
  • An egg-shaped cookie cutter (or use a knife to create your own!)
  • A spatula
  • A straw
  • A baking sheet covered in parchment paper or aluminum foil
  • Acrylic paint (Make sure your kids' clothes are protected!)
  • Assorted sized paint brushes
  • Twine, ribbon or yarn

Directions:

  1. Preheat the Oven to 250 degrees.
  2. Roll out the salt dough to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut out egg shapes using a cookie cutter. 
  3. Use a straw to make a hole at the top of the egg shape so you can hang them.
  4. Place the salt dough Easter eggs on the parchment/aluminum foil-covered baking sheets and bake for 2 hours.
  5. When eggs are cooled, paint!
  6. After the paint dries, string twine, ribbon, or yarn through the holes and hang.
