One of our favorite summer activities as a family is going on a whale watch. I have so many memories of running from one side of the whale watch boat to the other with the kids to spot the whales -- they were so excited!  Humpback whales will often have patches of barnacles on them, which show up as light green under the water.  On one whale watch, I was on my own on one side of the boat and was stunned to look down into the water and see those telltale light patches of green right below me -- a whale was rising to the surface right next to the boat.  It raised its head above the water to take a look, as they sometimes do.  It was scary, amazing and absolutely breathtaking.

For an unforgettable summer day, head to Boston for a whale watch. The New England Aquarium, in partnership with Boston Harbor City Cruises, offers whale watches from Boston's Central Wharf several times a day, heading out to the Stellwagen Bank Marine Sanctuary.  New England Aquarium naturalists on board share their expertise about the many whales, dolphins and birds that passengers see as well as lots of fun facts and stories. (Did you know that a whale eats a million calories a day?!)  It's especially rewarding when the naturalist recognizes a particular whale and can share where that whale has traveled and some of its family history.

New England Aquarium whale watches last three to four hours and are conducted on high-speed catamarans. Passengers can view the marine wildlife from outdoor viewing decks or indoor spaces with large windows. The boats feature a full bar with light snacks.
