If you’ve ever dreamed of stumbling upon a charming neighborhood bookstore where everyone knows your name—and your favorite genre—Líf Books in Bedford is your kind of place. I recently visited this new independent bookstore tucked next to Bedford Farms and had the pleasure of chatting with its owner, Valerie Arvidson. From the moment I walked in, I could tell this wasn’t just a shop—it was a passion project brought to life.
Valerie opened the store in late 2024, just in time for the holiday season. Valerie had long considered opening a bookstore, but it wasn’t until her husband launched his own business that she found the inspiration and courage to leap into entrepreneurship herself. “I don’t have a business background,” she says, “but I know books, I know people, and I wanted to create a place for families and the community.”
And she’s done exactly that. Líf Books offers a delightful blend of new and secondhand books for all ages. Valerie curates the selection with care, drawing from publishing industry resources, her own literary tastes, and recommendations from customers. A whole room is dedicated to children’s books—from baby board books to young adult favorites—and the warm, welcoming atmosphere invites families to linger. With a MFA and PhD in Creative Writing and several years teaching college-level English, Valerie draws on years of study and reading for her selections and recommendations.
One of the standout features is the kids’ room. Valerie has devoted an entire space to books for babies through young adults. “The kids’ books and families shopping here—it’s been really, really wonderful,” she said. “Families come in and they’re delighted by the kids’ room.” I explored the spacious kids room and found so many fun nooks and crannies, including a tented reading nook and a tiny little room for children to peek into next to the fireplace.

In addition to books, Líf Books offers gift certificates, special orders, and is beginning to host book clubs and craft workshops. Book clubs can even use the space for meetings—Valerie happily rearranges furniture to accommodate groups and offers the option for her to provide some guidance during discussions. She’s also exploring future writing groups and author events.
The response from the community has been enthusiastic. “People have been so positive and supportive,” says Valerie. “It’s really validating. I wanted to build something meaningful and local—and Bedford has embraced that.”
Located in the historical building next to Bedford Farms (look for the copper beech tree, Líf Books entrance is just behind it), Líf Books is more than a bookstore—it’s a cozy hub for readers, families, and anyone who loves a good story.
