Free Friday Commuter Rail Rides = Summer Adventures for Families!

May 21, 2026

Planning summer family adventures just got a lot more affordable! The MBTA is offering free Commuter Rail service on Fridays throughout June, July, and August, giving families a chance to skip traffic, save money, and explore some of New England’s most fun destinations without paying train fares. The special promotion applies to regular Commuter Rail service, with some exceptions for special event trains and trains to Cape Cod.

For local families, this opens the door to fun summer day trips and weekend kickoffs. Instead of dealing with packed highways and expensive parking, you can hop aboard and head out for a family adventure.

Some ideas for family destinations along MBTA Commuter Rail routes include:

  • Take the train to Boston for museums, the waterfront, parks, or a Red Sox game
  • Explore Newburyport with its shops, restaurants, waterfront boardwalk, and nearby beaches
  • Visit Worcester for family museums, sports, and downtown attractions
  • Spend time in Providence exploring parks, dining, and family-friendly attractions
  • Check out the newer rail access to New Bedford and Fall River for coastal exploration and history
  • Visit Rockport or Gloucester for beaches, harbor views, seafood, and a classic New England day trip

One of the best parts? The train ride itself often becomes part of the adventure for kids. We know how much kids love trains!
