At The Umbrella Arts Education program, learning, experimenting and growing through art is at the heart of what we do.

We offer classes for all ages – from toddler through adult – in Fall, Winter and Spring, as well as youth arts camps and adult ceramics classes in Summer.

Our classes cover a variety of media, from pottery to painting, stained glass to woodwork, digital arts to dance fitness, and many more -- all taught by experienced instructors who are practicing artists, arts educators, makers, and performers themselves.

The Umbrella Arts Education program is part of the expansive Umbrella Arts Center (formerly Emerson Umbrella), a multidisciplinary 501(c)3 nonprofit arts organization in Concord that is also home to an award-winning performing arts program, three gallery spaces, concert and film series, and studios for more than 50 working artists.

Classes are held in The Umbrella's state-of-the-art classrooms at 40 Stow Street, in the heart of the historic Concord Center Cultural District. These include all-new general arts classrooms, a new woodworking facility, dance studio, expanded ceramics wing, multitheater performing arts facilities, and more.

In addition to regular weekly youth & adult classes, we offer several one or two day workshops, School Vacation Week art programs, early-release-day classes, teen and multigenerational classes/workshops, art-themed birthday parties, discounted theater tickets for enrolled students, Kid-Care theater performances with childcare options, and more.

The Umbrella is ADA accessible and provides free parking and free admission to its visual arts galleries.

Business Review

"My 9-year-old daughter has been in the school vacation week camps the last two years. She has enjoyed her experience in each themed week very much.  She participated in the Concord Rec/Umbrella camp last August. The morning time was filled with outdoor play, swimming, games and activities organized by the Concord Recreation Department counselors.  She loved meeting new friends from the community. The highlight of the week of course was the Canobie Lake trip and she continues to talk about the memories she gained from that day.  The afternoon at The Umbrella is a great way to escape the heat after running around all morning and focus on art activities in a relaxed and colorful setting.  The staff is incredibly organized, thorough and manages to come up with unique art opportunities through mixed media, woodworking, performing arts, pottery and painting.  My daughter especially loved the pottery and an opportunity to even use the wheel with her age group this past summer.  We have some incredible pottery pieces that are on display in our home from her summer experience at The Umbrella.  She especially enjoyed being surrounded by so many other students with varying art talents and creativity to share as well. She cannot wait to sign up again for the first week of Summer Arts Under The Umbrella in June!" -- Email from Megan Connor, Boxborough, MA

"My 10-year-old son has really enjoyed sampling all the different kinds of art activities at The Annex – the first day, he came home equally excited by activities in theater, puppet-making, digital, and hands-on ceramics. He came home covered with clay and happy as a clam! By the end of the week, he was so proud of his bag-full of varied creations, and eager to continue working on some forms at home." – David Fox, Arlington, MA

"The [Umbrella] embodies a diverse slice of Concord and plays host to many functions important to the town of Concord. I have seen great music here, interesting and beautiful art, had a kid's art party hosted by them, all functions met or exceeded my expectations. [It] also provides an excellent and important arts-teaching function that is a great asset to the community. I see [it] continuing to provide a go-to place for generations to come." – John R, Boston, MA on Trip Advisor
